[those who shall die in battle]

those who shall die in battle
have too bright eyes
at war nobody ever decides to die in battle
(that’s worthless book romantic), and yet...
if one needs to talk about them, then —
I feel them too well
their appearance in your life is like illumination, kinda “here you are”
once they know by your gaze
you know who they are
and how they will go
they start to talk to you at the level of heart
and talks at the level of heart are always about nothing
and often are spoken as silence —
you make signs turning around,
while you walk behind each other so as not to be heard by the enemy.
talks in the language of heart are like oak leaves
there is hardly anything more lasting and eternal than them.
than their silent presence
in the middle of summer which will go into the ground, too
until the next oblivion.
that’s how keep silent while talking to you
those who decided to die in battle.
that’s how they talk to you while keeping silent
those who decided to die in battle.
you are revealed to them like truth
they are revealed, like truth, to you.
and in a desire to tell that there is nothing on the whole Earth
                                                                       more important than him —
you have no power to halt time, even for an instant.
you are powerless, you can’t give him anything
except for the rope from your heart.
and still
they feel your knowing of who they are
better than their own body.
and in an unconscious desire to die first they expose their sole fear —
it is better to go blind, to not exist,
anything is better —
only not to outlive the death of one
whose heart anchors them to the world like
an invisible silver pin
only to be the first...
and on the conveyor belt of the death, which already dead russia loaded us onto
we don’t let go of each other, even in nothingness
“let nothingness not part you,” yes...
every time you want to be wrong
about the brightness of those eyes
the eyes of those who decided one day
to die in battle
are always brighter than others’

[spirits of the forest and fields]

The battlefront is consuming my heart and my friends.
It is consuming all my words
and eyeing the rest of my body.

There are old myths about the times when an ogre came
and 10-15 of the best boys and girls were to him given every month
to satisfy his hunger and buy peace for the village.

The ground of the gray zone periodically opens its jaw,
to satisfy its hunger for war with us.
We offered ourselves to the war, to satisfy its hunger with us
and give peace to our country.
We are all queued in a long trench.
None of us knows when — and we don’t need to.
But our enemy is no ogre.
It is minor and overtakes only by the great quantity of small.
No wonder that evil
was painted as a plague in old myths,
as a swarm of small things in great quantity, as locusts
that ate all the harvest, as rats that are only dangerous
when there are a lot of them and worthless when alone.
Russia, that’s you. A multitude of small things in a great quantity.

And we are fused with our land by the color of our clothes,
by skin, blood, and way of life. We are somewhat
like spirits of the forest and fields.
Those you encounter for the first and the last time.
For the second year, we see nothing but Donbas.
And when we were let outside its limits for a few days
into another world — we still saw only it.
Industrial areas, terricones and quarries, watershed rivers
through which the frontline passes, tired people of warzone,
mines of the gray zone washed out by rains, destroyed cars,
      fire-impact, fire-impact, contact, MREs and
      uniforms, uniforms and MREs of
the enemy — all mixed up.

The world zeroed on defending this land.
And even if something were to exist after this, even then —
we probably won’t ever
really need anything else.

[left in occupation]

the sick light of the sky arrows
through not yet demolished windows of a strange house
dries up my face
dries up the minor waves of Siversky Don above our oak forest
which was left in occupation
everything is left there, what was destined
short moments of peace like the most precise foreshadowing of war
I lost Siversky Donets
the ruby house above it
along with you
they say fallen are mourned after the war ends
but our war will end with the life
of us all
therefore, a day to recall fallen
the next day — into the battle
the third — which will probably
never come
victory
the word you are reaching for, like for a river
which vanishes in the desert
oh Lord
how crippled we are in this desert
our desert is eternal
God give me strength to keep
losing beloved ones
God give me strength to let go of love
leave me only the strength for steel, bullets, bandages
and the heavy burden to carry out
from the battlefield
God give the strength to see, in place of our eternal enemy, only
emptiness

[left in occupation: 2]

such a suppressed
such a suppressed love
like binoculars lost in the oak forest
which you secretly go to look for together
find it
and keep silent from everybody
such a suppressed love
such a loss in a clearance of the forest and the river
of the multicam smeared with dirt
of the vest squeezing the chest
of unspent ammunition
such a lost love
left on the attic of the ruby house
sawed into flashes of memory
judged into an inability to confess
designated to be a secret
Siversky Donets flows in occupation
flows and waits to be liberated
“would you have been alive — I would’ve hugged you”
“would you have been alive — you’d recognized my voice behind the waves of Don”
I keep walking behind
as if it is another reconnaissance
I carry a backpack a rifle suppressed weariness
carry your heart
and you walk forward
your heart is heavy and bulky
like a fragment of a ruin after the shell
it takes every chance to weave around me like an ivy
even when it stopped beating
it says
“won’t let go”
says “don’t cry for me”
such a suppressed love
such a loss
let there be somebody
grieving for you
while you call me to the sky
brother in arms

[left in occupation: 3]

left in occupation
lost in war things
tend to return
love returns them
buying out the last ones where
the production had stopped
thus it is meaningless to grieve for the precious
things left in occupation
but what would you do with the touches of the dead on your body?
how can you live with those fallen and left on the battlefield
                                                           greeting you, addressing you?
what have the closed eyes of those left in the battle on the occupied lands seen?
the age of answers to the complicated questions has ended with the war
leaving the immortality for the questions
that even the wisest
that even the bravest
wouldn’t dare to answer
who will raise barrows above the last gazes into the sky?
the war gifts for free
the highly paid and longly mourned truth
the bodies are never letting go of the bodies
the living die together with the dead
those who fell in battle don’t die for a long time
before the winter of the twenty-second we didn’t know
what does it mean, “on a foreign field an eagle plucked his eyes away
and the wolves devoured his flesh — such must be his fate”
before the end of the February which will last for years
we will know what the eyes of those left on the battlefield see
before the end of the February which will last for years
we won’t ever learn the exact answer
to how to live with the touches of the dead on your body

[if we both survive]

                             for “Kucher”

if we both survive
I will try for the first time in my life
to plant a seed into yet
unmined field
with my hands of a city person
who only with the coming of war
saw
what’s hidden beneath the asphalt
if we both survive
we’ll live on the land
where with every lost breath
before your eyes
the past occurs
invisible and sharp
the moon will turn blue and buzz in our ears
every winter I will be embroidered by ice into mountains
                                                         and steppe as crooked maps
and there wouldn’t be a splinter of romance in it
romance has vanished far in the rear
along with heroism
leaving for me your sudden
presence...
grizzled and passionate
Death would be invited to bask with us by the wood flame
she’ll beat us with her wooden sticks
we’ll rub her
numbed hands
if we both survive
I wouldn’t so painfully endure
the painful light of spring
which hurts me
it will inevitably keep coming after winter that
I can’t forget
in this country winters are never forgotten

[monologue]

I would love to write poems
where every line would conceal at least
the sun the sea and the desert
and then
a sunrise among the frosty steppe
a heat at the sea
a coastal twilight in the summer
an evening in the oak forest
a veil of the night in the steppe

I would love to write poems
where every word would be a mystery
and a mirror,
in which anyone who reads it
would saw hundreds of their own reflections

I’d love to write in such a way
that eternity would write with me
its complex yet recognizable fractals
of the universe and a human

I’d love to converse in my writing
with Ovid and Borges
I’d love in my poems to talk about things with Heidegger
and walk the thin rope with Nietzsche
I would love to...

but I was born in a nation
that for hundreds of years defends itself
from the enemy six times bigger
defends its great country,
while the enemy wants at any price
to wipe us out, and have already perpetrated at least
three genocides (actually, there were more)

that’s why in my poems
I cry on the graves
of my sisters and brothers

I cry on the ruins of our cities
destroyed by russians
I cry for pubs
in which I drank with my dead
then, still alive
beer and wine

I cry for ruined cities
and for the occupied seaside

I cry in my poems in that small gap in time
when I am not fighting
when I am not standing in defense

I cry even when
I can’t cry anymore
when another mutilated body
doesn’t move anything in you

my people have cried for centuries on the graves,
and I am crying
and the only thing I can do apart from crying
— is to take a rifle in my hands
I did that a long time ago
for poets in this country are the first to hear the war
and every time they are considered insane
but everybody drinks from the cup
some drink half of it
some — to the very bottom

sometimes it seems that I learned to
kill with poems
dropping a grenade hanging from a drone
but I doubt my poems ever lose
the cry for the dead

that’s what it is — to be a poet in Ukraine
to always cry in poems
on the fresh graves

and also on those — hundred-years-old ones
not too funny, right?
and not optimistic, huh?
but fair

even when we forget our real name and language
we never never never
lose the faith
in our beauty and strength, in freedom,
and thus,
even left covered only with ashes —
we don’t give up

apparently, this is the gift of my people
