Week 0: Maksym Kryvtsov
This “Seven Ukrainian Poems” project was started spontaneously after Maksym Kryvtsov, an activist and a poet serving in AFU, was killed on the front lines together with his cat.
First, I translated a part of his poem about that cat to commemorate them both. Then, a few more of his poems. After that, I decided to translate a new modern Ukrainian poet every week.
Here are Maksym’s poems. Original Ukrainian versions are below.
*** I want to tell a story about a giant cat he is red like dried up August hayfields he only has white bib sad green like green butter eyes frequently squints his brows as if studying a scientific paper because there is no sun when you have last seen the sun some time ago at the beginning of the autumn he was a menace for all mice here hey this is big red cat’s dugout run past him as fast as you can they whispered to each other. Once he attempted to catch a mouse in a lazy yet phenomenal jump flew above the burner with an open blue fire now his burnt unkempt funnily curled like mustaches of a famous painter not so long whiskers are reminding of that legendary jump. He gets comfortable at the edge of a bunk near the dugout entrance which is covered with two layers of blankets and examanines something through narrow cracks maybe somebody a foe or a friend a fox or a person he waits. The cat knows every trail every trench hole dugout he has one secret when an awfully loud and hectic uproar resounds outside and the earth trembles it is old giants waking up and going about their life he jumps swiftly into the sheathing hole and hides somewhere in the depths and catacombs of a small dugout and wouldn't look out however you ask until the giants stop walking. When he goes to sleep slowly stretching front paws he dreams of summer an intact brick house chicken running through the yard children savouring meat pies a helmets suddenly rolls out of my hands drops into the dirt the cat wakes up squints looks around attentively that's ours: goes to sleep. *** Who would have thought six years of the war how could I've known when as a child I've gathered ripe apples at the end of August. Who would have thought I wandered with my friend through the industrial area of the city gathering the metal scraps of machine parts on the road 30 kopiykas per kilo (and the scales are rigged) to buy some "South night" candy and play Half-Life and now in the windbreaks I am gathering remains of the boys of people it seems to look like a person or part of a person nothing in the world is this cold. Somebody should make an application a map of the Lisove cemetery column number 58 4 steps forward from it and the third grave on the right is his the cemetery guide everybody would talk about nothing else. The long yellow bus number 10 just a few are on the route the fare is 25 kopiykas always full with people like a market before the September First you should keep your bag or a backpack close there are thieves stealthily cutting through faux leather taking the last of your money but today something larger was stolen from me: the sea. The whale of the sorrow swallows me I am here like Jonah I can't get out six years already though it lasts forever the wars never end the people do who would have thought. *** The Lord of the forest wraps you in a dampness soft like a chamois His tears fall from the leaves when He breathes His breathing is hard like a smoker’s. The Lord of automatic grenade launcher doesn’t talk much doesn’t think much His word is hard like dried earth his embrace is hot like a blast furnace His prayer lasts for exactly 32 words in short or long bursts His hair falls like thin branches like sloes. The Lord of the sleep sudden as a summer rain he lefts alone he erases words like a concealer and writes new ones in an illegible doctor’s script. I enter the praying cell of the dugout light a trench candle for high leafy trees for deep ravines and natural hallows for morning dew and the real Lord laughs. *** The pink flamingo of the sky bends to peck the city I look out from the trench like a mouse I spit the sand. And while you have eyes don't sleep and while you have lungs listen and while you smile it is worth digging because while you dig you live. The soil falls of in heavy lumps the sand mixed with the soil reminds of tahini halva. Although the sky is still pink like a pink flamingo in a moment there will be rain and split seeds will be sowing from metal trees. But here I need to look around not because the shells are falling not because the UAVs are flying not because the enemy might come but I want to answer the brother-in-arms' call: look, Dali, hoopoe eats a cricket, so funny. When I'll come back I'll buy tahini halva a hotdog on "Okko" gas station and then as long as it takes I'll be looking like sailors look for an island I'll be looking for that pink flamingo of the sky and when I'll meet him I wouldn't scare him I promise. *** The streets are bleeding with autumn I revel in the pungent smell of the wet fallen leaves chestnuts on the ground. I need to go on duty he needs to go on duty she needs to go on duty and even you. People walk through the streets shooting, cleaning up the city like old boots after walking through the autumn mountains others join them and sing: my weapons are Rama my body armor is Krishna he-e-ey. I need to go on duty the war is an incurable decease hug me. *** "a small one" = minute in 🇺🇦 war jargon "300" = wounded ″Hospitallers″ is a volunteer medical battalion "Jesus" is spelled with "H" in the poem (like a Hispanic name) "Golgotha" to "Mary" "Golgotha" to "Mary": do you copy? "Golgotha" I am "Mary" "Golgotha" I am "Mary" Loud and clear. We have two 300s we have two 300s do you copy: over. Five small ones five small ones we are coming. "Mary" joined Hospitalliers at the beginning of the March she has yellow, like millet, hair in which the sky got entangled the fish got entangled and the fingers of the boy she had met on a lecture on the history of cinematography in Karpenko-Kary university. She loves to gather rain in her palms get her pink rubber boots on run out onto the asphalt road and measure puddles jump into the deepest one and look for a fish of the rain. Even at war she paints her nails pink puts a pink lipstick on her lips which adores to kiss that boy who studies to be a film director when the fish of his fingers wallows in her yellow, like millet, hair quiet and slow sometimes that boy comes into her black-and-white dreams with a pouch of a pink paint. "Maria" gathered her crew: "Matthew," "John," and "Magdalene" who smells of bread and milk "Matthew" had a small tattoo of a fish on his left forearm "John" loved to husk seeds into one bunch before eating them. They quickly jumped into MT-LB and rushed to the "Golgotha" position: fortification on the terricone. Boys on "Golgotha" were shelled with clustering munition: "The Rebel" had his head smashed a shard getting deep into his skull his stomach was torn open and two fingers on the left hand were ripped of. "The Rebel" is electrician in his one-room apartment above a single bed he hang a large neon purple cross he waited for the last Sunday of every month to go for a walk with his fourteen-year-old daughter Anna They go together to "Zhovten" cinema to watch animations or repeats take sits in the front row drop their hard boots and extend feet eat the popcorn sloppily and then drop their eyes in front of cleaners walk by the river feed the pigeons with potato dips and look at people. On February 28th he woke up earlier than the first rooster crowed looked at the large purple cross then gathered a small backpack and went to a local recruiting center and after only two months fought the enemy with neon Jedi swards for potato dips for "Zhovten" for Anna for people and pigeons. The "Stugna" ATGM operator "Jesus" had every limb wounded a had trauma and one small shard got between his ribs. "Jesus" has hair thick like tar and black like licorice candy he graduated from Kyiv academy of arts adores paintings of Bosch and of his five-year-old nephew he takes magnifying glass goes to Hanenki's Museum examines crackles and minor details on large oil paintings imagines himself philantropist in blue silk robe sits on a windowsill and observes in the Shevchenko park children are playing a girl with his dad feeds potato dips to pigeons and heavy chestnut leaves fall on them. At the beginning of the February he told his friends: let the cup of war pass from me but if it will not pass I'll be drinking from it thirstily and he wasn't lying. And everyday he went on duty on his position lifting to "Golgotha" a heavy rocket of "Stugna" brewed coffee from drips and looked how the streets are ruined the caravans of machines are moving the crows are looking for food in the terricon's ground the night swallows the war and the worlds he drank from that cup up to choking. "Mary"'s crew after five short ones arrived on "Golgotha" "The Rebel" was lying with frozen smile on his lips may be he reached the place where it is raining potato dips all cinemas only have front rows and on every street there are multicolored neon crosses. When paramedics ran to "Jesus" "Mary" understood that in his blue eyes one can drown one can be imprisoned behind bars of his thick hair but she needs to provide the aid. "Mary" have drawn with "Jesus"'s blood on his forehead: "'Jesus' from mechanized, the time of tourniquet application thirty third year A.D." In the last moments of his life "Jesus" breathed out summers and winters universities and streets fishes and pigeons museums and parks sins and sorrow loneliness and trees seas and rivers love. "Golgotha" to "Mary" "Golgotha" to "Mary": do you copy? "Golgotha" I am "Mary" "Golgotha" I am "Mary" Loud and clear. We have two 300s we have two 300s do you copy: over. Five small ones five small ones we are coming. *** The Lord said go to the field gather rusty cartridge cases of My body. Comb My hair made of coal with cannonades with barrages with lightnings. See, My beard is appearing as a hoarfrost comb it with tracks with heavy wheels. Gather Me like blackcurrants put into the three-liter jar of your heart. Preserve Me like weapons and reopen when winter comes.
In Ukrainian (The first two poems is taken from here and here, the rest is from my copy of Maksym’s book ″Вірші з бійниці″) *** Хочу розповісти вам історію про велетенського кота рудого як висохлі серпневі покоси він має лиш білий нагрудник сумні зелені наче зелене масло очі часто прижмурює брови наче вивчає наукову працю бо сонця тут не трапляється коли ви востаннє бачили сонце свого часу на початку осені він був загрозою усіх тутешніх мишей ей це бліндаж великого рудого кота пробігай повз нього як найшвидше шепотіли вони між собою.
